Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean. It’s known for the white-sand beaches lining the Freetown Peninsula. The capital city, Freetown, commemorates the nation’s slave-trade history with the Cotton Tree landmark and King’s Yard Gate. Both were known as places of refuge for returned slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nearby Bunce Island was a key departure point during the slave trade.
Just outside Freetown, the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary offers up-close viewings. The Turtle and Banana Islands, off Freetown Peninsula, are popular with snorkelers and divers. In the Moa River, in the country’s south, Tiwai Island is home to primates, turtles and pygmy hippos. In the north, Outamba-Kilimi National Park features grassy savannah. Mount Bintumani, Sierra Leone’s highest peak, is in the Loma Mountains in the northeast, with views over west Africa. Rare birds inhabit the Tingi Hills Forest Reserve. In the country’s center, Kangari Hills Forest Reserve is home to chimpanzees and endangered elephants.
